Ishpeming grabs first tennis victory of spring season

GLADSTONE — Ishpeming notched its first victory of the high school boys tennis season Monday as the Hematites took down Gladstone 5-3.

The teams split the four singles matches with Ishpeming’s Hart Holmgren dispatching Sean Holm 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and the Hematites’ Trevor Freeman blanking Jimmy Maki at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.

The difference came in doubles, where the Hematites (1-4) won three of the four matches, each in straight sets.

Ishpeming winners were Isaac Lazenby and David Raihala at No. 1, Matt Penrose and Drake Sundberg at No. 2 and Tyler Larson and George Lasko at No. 4.

The Braves lone victory came at No. 3, where the team of Erik Soderman and Peter Noblet outlasted Ishpeming’s Dawsen Emanuelson and Joey King 7-5, 6-0.

“A lot of guys impressed me,” Ishpeming head coach Erl Langness said. “Our two freshmen (Emanuelson and King) just about had that first set. They haven’t played much and that was an impressive set.

“Next week, I should finally have my full lineup. It took a while to settle in and we’ve only had one outside practice.”

Ishpeming hosts Iron Mountain at 3:30 p.m. today.

Kingsford 7, Marquette 1

At Kingsford, the Redmen’s lone win came at No. 1 singles, when Alec Olivier downed Brett Hicks 6-1, 6-2.

“Brett played hard but just couldn’t hang on,” Kingsford coach John VanDusen said, noting Olivier has only given up five games all year — three to Hicks.

The lone Marquette pair to take their match to three sets was Soren Higgins and Luke Ferzacca as Bruce Bilgreen and Logan Smith prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
