Munising’s Madeleine Peramaki doubles up at Keweenaw Classic indoor track meet
HOUGHTON — Junior Madeleine Peramaki of Munising won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the Michigan Tech Keweenaw Classic Indoor high school track and field meet held indoors at the Huskies’ Student Development Complex gym on Thursday.
Peramaki took charge early in the 1,600 before holding off a charge by Houghton’s Anabel Needham to win by two-tenths of a second in 5 minutes, 43.8 seconds.
She added a 2:36.2 time in the 800.
“She (Needham) ran the second half real hard,” Peramaki told the Escanaba Daily Press. “She paced herself very well. I got caught up in all the excitement and went out way too hard.
“The extra turns tend to slow you down, but this was a good workout. I think this helps make me more confident for the next races.
“I won’t be as nervous for the Dome meet (April 19 for Upper Peninsula Division 3 schools in Marquette).”
Team scores weren’t kept at the meet.
L’Anse won two events at the meet, the boys 60 and the 800 relay, but details about who was involved weren’t available.
