The best of form: Marquette’s Haddie Ketzenberger wins all-around as Superior 7 edges Negaunee for U.P. conference gymnastics title

NEGAUNEE — The Superior 7 cooperative team from the Copper Country edged out Negaunee by just over a point for the title at the Upper Peninsula Conference Gymnastics Meet held at Negaunee High School on Monday evening.

Superior 7 is a cooperative team based in Lake Linden-Hubbell but also including Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Baraga, Chassell and Jeffers.

S-7 scored 130.775 points to 129.65 for Negaunee, while Marquette finished third with 121.575.

Marquette’s Haddie Ketzenberger won the all-around with 33.8 points. She won the beam with a score of 8.9 and finished fifth in the other three apparatuses — floor exercise with 8.5, bars with 7.7 and a three-way tie for fifth on vault with 8.7.

Lily Kumpula of S-7 was second in all-around with 33.55 and teammate Emma Gariepy was third with 33.25. Gariepy won vault with 8.95.

Negaunee’s May Waters was fourth in all-around with 33.075 and the Miners’ Kylar Kallioinen was fifth with 32.525.

Waters was second on bars with 8.05, third in floor with 8.6 and fourth on vault with 8.725.

Kallioinen was third in vault with 8.8 and fourth on bars with 7.75.

Skylar Taavola was a winner on both bars and floor exercise. She won bars with 8.1 and tied Kumpula for the top spot in floor with 8.65.

In addition, Negaunee’s Kalli Mattson was third in bars with 7.85.

Regionals for qualifying teams from the U.P. will be held Saturday, March 3, at Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills.
