IRONWOOD — Ishpeming and Marquette switched places in the Class A-B-C girls rankings for the biggest change involving area schools in this week’s high school basketball polls conducted by select members of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
Released this morning, the pollsters moved the Hematites up to third and the Redettes down to fourth in the A-B-C girls voting.
Ishpeming (15-3) won its only game last week, 73-60 over Escanaba, while Marquette (14-4) lost its lone contest in the past seven days, 61-55 at Houghton.
In this, the final week of the girls regular season, Marquette is slated to host A-B-C No. 2 Negaunee tonight if the weather holds out.
Ishpeming stays at home for two games this week, with Manistique scheduled tonight and Kingsford on Thursday.
Westwood (12-6) crept back into the A-B-C girls top five by one vote over West Iron County, which it has been playing hopscotch with the past two weeks, switching on and off for the No. 5 slot.
The Negaunee girls, despite moving to 19-0 after two convincing wins last week, hasn’t been able to crack the stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in A-B-C held by St. Ignace since the poll’s second week in mid-January.
St. Ignace even suffered its first loss last week, an 88-56 thrashing at Detroit Edison Public School Academy, the No. 5 team in the state in Class C.
Only the smallest of moves was made by the area’s other four ranked teams.
Marquette slipped from second alone into a tie for second with Gladstone in the boys A-B-C poll.
Ishpeming stayed slotted at No. 5 in A-B-C boys.
In Class D, the Munising girls are still No. 1 with three-place votes and the Mustangs boys stayed fourth.
Weekly Associated Press polls usually released today won’t be out until Wednesday due to the President’s Day holiday on Monday.
In another big girls game this week, Westwood is at Houghton, which received a vote in A-B-C, in a makeup game on Wednesday.
For the boys, Iron Mountain is at Ishpeming on Wednesday in a game that was postponed Monday.
