6 duos crowned champs at Casa tennis tourney

MARQUETTE — Marquette and Munising players were a part of all six flight winners at the 25th annual Casa Calabria Doubles Classic held recently in Marquette.

Some 44 players participated with all invited to a dinner at the Casa Calabria Restaurant afterward.

Proceeds went to support the Marquette Tennis Association fund-raising effort at the Mickey Johnson Tennis Courts at Williams Park on Ohio Street in Marquette, along with its annual Fun In Tennis camp for youth that has taken place for 32 years.

The MTA has committed to raise $40,000 to improve the Johnson courts, both tennis and basketball, and establish an American With Disabilities Act path to the playground area. It’s all part of a matching grant through the city of Marquette and applied to with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Here are the championship matches, including hometowns:

Men’s division — Flight 1: Brett Girard, Marquette, and Dennis Yelle, Marquette, defeated Tony Calo, Iron Mountain, and Dennis Wilbee, Rapid River. Flight 2: Joe Havican, Marquette, and Nathan Antilla, Menominee, defeated Earl Lepisto, Menominee, and Gene Aho, Marquette. Flight 3: Rod Gendron, Munising, and David Reeves, Traverse City, defeated Rob Cook, Marquette, and Darrell Dixson, Munising. Flight 4: Matt Johnson, Munising, and Greg Pawlusiak, Marquette, defeated Mark Shanks, Kingsford, and David Giddens, Marquette.

Women’s division — Flight 1: Kim Rotundo, Marquette, and Sally Reeves, Traverse City, defeated Jill Sandell, Marquette, and Claudia Vanlandschoot, Munising. Flight 2: Marlene Woo-Lun, Marquette, and Cathy Halverson, Marquette, defeated Pam Laurich, Marquette, and Laura Ann, Marquette.
