Trio perfect at plate for Martin Sports in Iron Range Women’s Softball League

NEGAUNEE — Veronica Slone, Vanessa Briones and Ashley Asgaard each went 3 of 3 with extra-base power to lead Martin Sports to a narrow 14-13 victory over Crossfit 906 in a Class A game in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on May 24.

Slone included two doubles and had two RBIs, Briones had a triple and two RBIs and Asgaard notched a double while scoring two runs.

Crossfit’s Lizzy VanBuren went 3 of 4 with a triple and double.

In other Class A action, Screened Image pulled out a 24-15 victory over Jasper Ridge Brewery as four of the winners each went 5 of 6 with at least three runs scored — Courtney Finkbeiner, Brittney Rovelsky, Hannah Holma and Stacie Kraus.

Jasper Ridge’s Danielle Carlson was 4 of 5, while teammate Erika Bjorne and Destiny Bullard both were 3 of 6 with three runs scored.

Sister’s Jesse Rosten homered and doubled to her team to a 14-2 win over Honkala Construction. Teammate Sandie Whitford had a triple and double.

Honkala’s Laura Lesperance hit a triple.

Debbie Zummak went 5 of 5 and Mary Niemi 4 of 5 with a homer to lead Buck’s Party Store past Venice 1, 19-12. Venice’s Cassy Sandberg was 3 of 4 with two triples while teammate Amy Steele was 3 of 3.

Megan Reilly went 5 for 5 to help Cognition Brewing Company upend Jubilee Foods 16-9. Jubilee’s Sheri Wooden and Bethy Williams each were 3 of 4.

In Class B, three of the five games were decided by one or two runs.

Mary Kaye Grady went 4 of 4 and Becky Lee was cited for a great defensive game in Venice 3’s 12-11 nailbiter over Quality Car Care. QCC’s Connie Kontio was 5 of 5 and Gina Debelak doubled.

Jamee Gobert, Lillee Martin and Arica Altobello all homered as Dave’s Collision slipped past Yooper Shirts 15-13. Yooper’s Loretta Willey also hit a homer.

Liz King went 4 of 4 and Shelly Malay 3 of 4 to lead Signs Unlimited past Eagles 23-21. Eagles’ Alaina Treloar went 3 of 3 with an over-the-fence homer, Amy Bazinette went 4 of 4 with a homer and Amber Nault 2 of 4 with a homer.

Josey Moyle, Sarah Massie and Katie Rankinen all went 3 of 3 to lead Tino’s past Buster’s 19-3. Moyle also had a homer and triple and Massie a homer and two doubles.

Buster’s Brandi Anderson went 2 of 2 with a homer while Kennan Marana hit a triple.

Macey Mahoski, who also homered, and Jordann Grigg each hit two triples to lead Jack’s Teepee 1 over Pasquali’s 12-7.

In Class C, Mallory Pruett went 4 of 5 with a homer, Liz Beauchamp 4 of 4 and winning pitcher Kathy Gischia 3 of 4 to lead QCPFC to a narrow 21-20 win over Marquette Embroidery.

ME’s Amy Young went 5 of 5, while Annette Gleason, who homered, and Shauna Annala each were 4 of 4.

Jody Hemmila crashed the family party as she, Rhonda Bertucci, Hannah Bertucci, Kinsie Bertucci and Kayla Bertucci all doubled in Bertucci Construction’s 15-11 win over River Rock Lanes.

River Rock’s Stephanie Perry hit a grand slam homer.

Toni Tikkanen knocked a homer out of the park to help AAA Insurance clobber Upper Peninsula Health Plan 24-7.

The winners’ Chelsey Robinson also homered while Katie Tonge went 4 of 4. UPHP’s Chelsea Hewitt, who homered, and Cheryl Churack, who doubled, each went 2 of 3.

Mel Cox was 4 of 4 to lead Paradise to a 20-5 pasting of Wooden Nickel. The victors’ Lori Nylander, who doubled, and Amie Axford each went 3 of 3. Nickel’s Katie Walker and Ashley Spilling cranked out two hits apiece.

Caitlin Hewitt and Megan Menard doubled to lead Willey’s Tire Shop past Venice 2, 26-19. Venice’s Kristen Utzman homered and Mara Marton tripled.

Lynn Laakso homered to help U.P. Fabricating get past Jack’s Teepee 2, 30-1.
