Negaunee, Westwood post 7-1 boys tennis victories

MARQUETTE — The Negaunee boys tennis team remained undefeated Wednesday after the Miners took down Marquette 7-1.

Negaunee’s Luke Skewis and Chas Kumpula both picked up two-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while Thomas Sertich outlasted Redman Luke McCarthy in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. Marquette’s only win came at No. 1 singles where Alec Olivier defeated Eric Hurst, 6-0, 6-1.

The Miners (6-0-1) had an easy time winning the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 doubles matches, while No. 1 was quite competitive. In the end, though, Negaunee took that one too as Klay Ronn and Peyton Anderson defeated Marquette’s Adam Skendzel and Kees Gray, 6-2, 6-3.

“Our doubles played really well today,” Negaunee coach Kyle Saari said. “Tom overcame a slow start at No. 3 and did a great job resetting in the second and third. We’re making strides, but we’re far from satisfied yet.”

Escanaba 7, Munising 1

At Escanaba, the Eskymos used strong performances from their doubles tandems to defeat the Mustangs.

Crister Carne at No. 1, Josh Grassel at No. 2 and Nathan Pasae at No. 3 each picked up singles victories for the Eskymos. Munising’s lone victory came at No. 4 singles, where Mitchell Coyne defeated Max Shariff, 6-2, 7-5.

Escanaba swept the doubles with the closest match coming at No. 1, where Paul Carne and Nick Dufoar emerged victorious in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Cade Contreras and Anthony Mattson.

“We were competitive, but they were really strong in doubles,” Munising head coach Rod Gendron said. “They were just really tough to deal with.”

The Mustangs (1-2) play at Westwood Tuesday.

Westwood 7, Gwinn 1

At Gwinn, the shorthanded Modeltowners managed a victory at No. 3 singles when Mason Bockert defeated Matt Paavo, 6-2, 6-0.

Otherwise it was all Westwood, as No. 1 singles player Brett Frederickson bested Jacob Porubsky 6-1, 6-2, and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Austin Pierpont and Dylan Willey felled Eddie Chapman and Isaac Redlon, 6-1, 6-3.

Gwinn also had to forfeit out at No. 4 singles and doubles without players available.
