Munising tennis gets second win

Mustangs sweep doubles matches to top Gladstone

By Journal Sports Staff

GLADSTONE — The Munising tennis team used some good performances from its doubles squads to defeat Gladstone 5-3.

The Mustangs (2-3) swept all of the doubles matches and won the No. 4 competition by forfeit. The best match was at No. 1 doubles where the Munising tandem of Cade Contreras and Eli Werner defeated Gladstone’s Austin Bergquist and Dean Herioux 7-5, 6-2.

“Cade and Eli looked like they would have a difficult match as they fell behind early, but they won the next six to put it away,” Mustangs head coach Rod Gendron said.

In singles action, Munising only picked up one victory and that was at the No. 2 match where Landon Peters defeated the Braves’ Danny Peterson in two sets (6-3, 6-2). Gladstone won the other three matches with Alex Miron winning at No. 1 singles and Ben Flaminio won at No. 4.

“I was very impressed with Landon,” Gendron said. “He beat a quality opponents and played very intentionally. He looked like he had a plan going in and he executed it well.”

The most competitive singles match was at No. 3 where the Braves’ Sean Holm outlasted Munising’s Mitchell Coyne in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4).

“Mitchell is usually our No. 4 player, but we moved him up to No. 3 and he did well,” Gendron said. “He fought hard for three sets and that’s pretty good being there for the first time.”

Munising plays at Iron Mountain Monday afternoon.
