Marquette track gets wins at tough Marinette Invitational

MARINETTE, Wisconsin — The Marquette Senior High School boys track team finished third at the Marinette, Wisconsin, Invitational, with 108 points. The MSHS girls were fifth with 92.

Freedom, Wisconsin, won the meet with 200, while Bay Port, Wisconsin, was runner-up with 164. The only other Upper Peninsula school at the nine-school meet was Menominee, which finished seventh in the girls meet and ninth in the boys.

Garrett Rudden was the Marquette boys lone winner as he took the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 30.27 seconds, more than 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Cole Cohorst of Bay Port. He was also third in the 3,200.

Ethan Martysz was second in the 200 in 23.23, just behind winner Caden Hofacker of Freedom, and third in the 100 in 11.21. MSHS’ Colin Shinners was third in the 400 in 53.10 and fourth in the 100 hurdles.

The Redmen were third in both the 400 and 1,600 relays, with Elijah Pickard running both. Martysz was in the 400 along with Alex DuVall and Andrew Gale, while also running the 1,600 was Julien Malherbe, Matthew Millado and Caleb Byma.

The Redmen’s best field event finish was by Raphael Millado, second in the high jump clearing 6-feet.

In the girls meet, the Redettes won the 800 relay in 1:52.08, more than a second ahead of runner-up Freedom. The unit included Izzie Peterson, Hannah Detmers, Enola Jeevar and Rachael Hunt.

Peterson won the preliminaries and finished second in the finals of the 100, her finals time 12.68, just one-hundredth of a second behind winner Gianna Kornaus of Pulaski, Wisconsin.

Peterson was also second in the 200 in 27.48, about three-quarters of a second behind Bailey Cisar of Bay Port.

Teammate Sierra Carlson was second in the long jump with a leap of 15-9, just three inches short of winner Janelle Bronkhorst of Pulaski.

Delaney Sall was third in the 400 in 1:03.60 and third in the 800 in 2:27.40.

Marquette’s Jacquie Cammarata was third in the 300 hurdles in 49.69.

Bay Port won the girls meet with 146 points, while Freedom had 138 1/3, Marinette 127 and Pulaski 96 1/2. Peshtigo was a distant sixth behind the Redettes with 36 1/2.
