Gladstone beats storm, Negaunee in high school baseball action

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee baseball team had to literally try to ride out the storm Wednesday afternoon as it tried to play a home doubleheader against Gladstone.

But the Miners couldn’t outlast either the weather or the Braves offense as Gladstone rallied for an 11-5 win. The second game was called shortly before the field was doused in rain.

Even though his team could only get in one game on its road trip, Gladstone head coach Don Lauscher was happy with how the game went. However, he still thought his team had some things to work on.

“I thought we rallied well,” he said. “We strung a bunch of hits together at the start, but then we went flat and made a few errors. We have to stop doing that because that had been our ‘MO’ all year. Once we get ahead, we just have to keep our foot on the gas pedal and we didn’t do that.

“They started hitting the ball well after that, but then we came together and finished strong. We started and finished strong, but we have to play well in the middle, too.”

The Braves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Negaunee started to chip away at Gladstone’s advantage by scoring four runs in the third. The Miners later tied it 5-5 with a run in the fifth.

Pitching woes then started to plague Negaunee as the Braves pushed across six runs in the top of the sixth to bust the game wide open. The telling stat was that Gladstone managed only three hits during the rally.

“They jumped out on us early, but we kept it close until the end,” Negaunee head coach Jason Siik said. “Once we put the bat on the ball, good things happened, but in the sixth, we just gave up a lot of walks. They’re a good ball club and they put together a win.

“I’m still feeling good, though. The last inning was rough, but we played a good team tough. There’s better things to come and I know we’ll put it together. We’re heading in the right direction that’s for sure.”

The Braves were led by Tyson Seymour, who had an impressive day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple along with two runs scored and four RBI. Teammates Cooper Cavadeas and Carson Shea each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Negaunee’s best offensive performance came from Mark Anderson, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Teammate Carter Richardson had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Owen Hanson earned the win on the mound for Gladstone after giving up five hits and two walks while striking out four. Alex Zampese took the loss for Negaunee after giving up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Negaunee heads to Escanaba for a tournament Saturday, while Gladstone plays at Traverse City Central on Friday.
