5 Northern Michigan University golfers named all-GLIAC

KARISSA GUTHRIE 10th at GLIAC Championship

MARQUETTE — Five Northern Michigan University golfers have earned all-GLIAC accolades.

Karissa Guthrie, Haley Hewer, Martin Eliasson, Austin Elsner and Marquette Senior High School graduate Avery Rochester were all named to the honorable mention team for their performance over the course of the 2016-17 campaign.

“To have five Wildcats named all-GLIAC is an incredible accomplishment for our program,” interim head coach Bob Bastian said. “They have worked so hard for this and represent Northern Michigan and the GLIAC with integrity.”

Guthrie, Hewer and Rochester’s efforts helped the women’s team place in the top five at four of their five spring events, including the GLIAC Championship.

Rochester tied for sixth, Guthrie tied for 10th and Hewer tied for 12th at the conference championship, helping the Wildcats finish as runners-up in only their second season of competition.

AVERY ROCHESTER 6th at GLIAC Championship

“Haley, Avery and Karissa have been a major reason why this new women’s golf program has had such great success,” Bastian said.

Eliasson and Elsner were two of the top performers on the men’s team. Eliasson was the top Wildcat finisher at three events while Elsner paced the squad at the GLIAC Championship by tying for sixth.

“Austin and Martin have been steady players for years now and are more than deserving of this recognition,” Bastian said.

Golfers were named to the teams based on a

Golfstat regional ranking.

Caro Els, who was the top finisher on the NMU women’s golf team at three events, including the GLIAC Championship where she tied for second, did not meet the minimum number of rounds played to be recognized as all-GLIAC.

Last season, Guthrie, Eliasson and Elsner garnered all-GLIAC honors. Elsner, a first-team selection, became the first Wildcat since 1999 to earn a spot on either the first or second team. Guthrie and Eliasson were honorable mention.
