Marquette Senior High School baseball Redmen open season with road split

HARRIS — Garrett Finkbeiner and Blake Henriksen combined on a three-hitter as Marquette defeated Bark River-Harris 10-3 to open the Redmen’s high school baseball season on Thursday.

The host Broncos came back in the nightcap to post a 6-3 win.

Finkbeiner started the opener and allowed three singles and one earned run in four innings, striking out nine and walking three.

Henriksen went the final two innings and didn’t allow a hit, walk or run while fanning two.

Batting at the bottom of the order, Marquette’s Jake Peterson was the only batter on either team in the first game to get multiple hits as he went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Henriksen had a double, knocking in two runs and scoring twice, Tyler Delmont had a single and two RBIs and John Thomson had a hit and scored twice.

Broncos pitcher Mason Korhonen, who went the first three innings, absorbed the loss.

BR-H scored in the first inning before Marquette tied it in the top of third. The Broncos retook a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third before MSHS blew things open with six runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Fielding was a bit rough to start the season for both teams — BR-H committed six errors and Marquette two as eight of the game’s 13 runs were unearned.

The host team jumped out again early in Game 2, building a 5-0 lead after three innings, this time holding off the Redmen, who scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Logan Holm was the second of three Marquette pitchers and took the loss, going 1 2/3 innings and giving up four runs on two hits and three walks.

James Bender started and went 1 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run, no hits but five walks as he struck out two. Alec Gadzinski went the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks.

Hunter Doucette had two of Marquette’s five hits and scored a run in the nightcap. Teammates Alec Beauchamp and Garrett Finkbeiner each had an RBI, while Finkbeiner, Gadzinski and Holden Shaneberger all singled.

The Broncos’ big hit was a two-run double by Nick Lippens in the third. Sam Hall and Matt Richer combined on the mound for BR-H.

Marquette plays a single game at Escanaba at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
