Marquette, Negaunee softball teams struggle

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves ran their winning streak to five games Saturday after posting four softball victories in the Gerry Smith Memorial tournament.

Gladstone squeezed past Negaunee 3-2 in its opener, then romped past Marquette 14-1 in four innings and Norway 17-5 in five innings prior to taking a 5-0 decision from Kingsford.

Jenna Steinhoff tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10 in Gladstone’s final game of the tournament, now named in honor of the late Smith, who coached the Braves to a pair of Division 3 state titles and at least 10 regional championships during his tenure.

The Flivvers beat Marquette 14-5 in their opener, then dropped an 8-7 decision to Negaunee.

“I thought we played pretty well against Marquette,” Kingsford coach Kevin Murdock said. “Most of the runs we gave against Negaunee were unearned, which was kind of frustrating.”

Against Marquette, Steinhoff threw a two-hitter, whiffed four and walked one.

Marquette played without its ace pitcher, senior Chelsea Wiggins, who was out with a concussion.

“Their main catcher is also out with a sprained foot, which is very unfortuate for them,” Gladstone coach John Nevala said.

Maddie Kowalski and Sydney Herioux went 3 for 3 and Kaitlyn Hardwick had two hits against Negaunee. Kowalski was also the winning pitcher.

“Negaunee pitched well and played good defense,” Nevala said. “We had to play small ball against them. We’re very happy with the way the kids played in this tournament. After starting the season slow, this was a good boost.”

The Braves host Marquette in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Norway opened with a 9-7 triumph over Negaunee.

Winning pitcher Kayte Casanova whiffed four, walked four in a three-hitter while helping the Knights overcome six errors.

The Knights took advantage of 12 errors and put 20 runners on base in a 19-4 rout of Marquette in three innings.
