ISHPEMING — Westwood High School’s Jon Beckman has been selected as a regional Athletic Director of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
He earned the title for the Upper Peninsula, which is Region 14 of the state group, and will be presented his award on Sunday at the MIAAA annual conference in Traverse City with more than 500 ADs expected in attendance.
Beckman has been AD for the NICE Schools for six years, earlier beginning his career as a physical education and health education teacher. For the past three years, he has also been principal at Aspen Ridge Middle School.
Beckman coached football for 18 years, including the Patriots’ varsity team, along with track and field for a dozen years. He’s had teams earn six MHSAA regional titles and four U.P. championships.
“In the two years that I have gotten to work with Jon, he has always upheld a high level of organization and leadership for his district,” fellow athletic director Blaise Zimmer of Marquette Senior High School said. “Not only does he do a phenomenal job serving the district as athletic director, but he also holds the role of middle school principal as well. I know that if I ever need anything, Jon will be there to offer his help or guidance.”
Beckman and his wife Sara have three children, Nathan, 15, Zachary, 12, and Andrew, 5.
