Kingsford rallies in overtime to knock out Negaunee from regional tournament

NEGAUNEE — Kingsford rallied from a four-goal deficit in the second period and defeated Negaunee 7-6 in overtime in an MHSAA Divison 2 hockey regional game on Tuesday.

The Flivvers (12-12-1) trailed by three goals early in the third period and answered with a Daunte Fortner goal and two straight from Alek Shanks.

Joe Murvich’s top-shelf shot 54 seconds into overtime decided the contest.

Negaunee established a 4-0 lead in the second period with the first two of Shane Ring’s three-goal hat trick with teammates Neal Violetta and Eric Hurst adding tallies. Hurst had five assists.

Kingsford, which defeated Negaunee twice in the regular season, closed to within two goals later in the second on a power play goal by Ben Johnson and Reece Fortner goal.

Ring completed his hat trick before the second period was over as the Miners entered the third period with a 5-3 lead.

Violetta made it 6-3 in the third before the Flivvers began their comeback, which started with Fortner scoring his second straight breakaway goal.

Shanks then scored two goals in the final four minutes of regulation, the second with 70 seconds remaining to tie the game.

Kingsford took all five shots in overtime. Johnson assisted on Murvich’s game-winner.

Kingsford goalie Trevor Anderson turned away 30 shots, while Negaunee’s Nolan Corwin made 45 saves.
