Negaunee, R-M post boys victories

GWINN — Negaunee broke open a competitive game in the second quarter before cruising to a 74-31 high school boys basketball victory at Gwinn on Thursday night.

The Miners, who suffered three straight losses to the top three Upper Peninsula Class ABC teams in January, have rebuilt a three-game winning streak to improve to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference.

Gwinn (6-9, 4-6) stayed within 16-6 after one quarter before Negaunee broke things open with a 20-4 run through the second period to take a 36-10 halftime advantage.

“We came out with good energy and effort, but when they started pressuring us heavily in the halfcourt, we lost all our offensive efficiency,” GHS coach Jim Finkbeiner said. “And Negaunee, they’re very efficient on offense.

“If one thing isn’t working for them, they’ll go to something else until they get it going again.”

It showed as the Miners made more than half their shots, 26 of 50 for 52 percent, while adding a solid if not spectacular 18 of 28 night at the free throw line.

Negaunee freshman Jason Waterman led all scorers with 19 points, while senior teammate Dre Tuominen had 17 and the other Negaunee star senior, Trent Bell, added 15.

Sophomore Tucker Taylor paced the Modeltowners with 11 points and nine rebounds, while senior Reed Wiedenhoefer added 10 points.

Negaunee, which also won the JV game 65-16, plays at Westwood on Wednesday, while Gwinn hosts M-PC leader Norway on Tuesday.

Republic-Michigamme 66, Hannahville 16

At Republic, the Hawks overwhelmed their Northern Lights League opponent with shots, scoring 12 baskets for 25 points in the first quarter alone.

Junior Dylan Hanninen led R-M (5-9) with 22 points, including 11 in the opening quarter. Senior teammate Marcus Vetengle added 10 points while junior Chris Morgan had eight.

The Hawks raced to a 41-2 halftime lead before the Soaring Eagles managed eight points in the third quarter.

Hannahville was led by Jacob Ortiz with eight points.
