Ishpeming girls score road victory

L’ANSE — Spreading her scoring around with multiple baskets each quarter, Marissa Maino pumped in 22 points to lead Ishpeming to a 67-57 victory at L’Anse in a girls high school basketball game played Monday.

“This was an up-and-down game with L’Anse trimming the lead down but (they) just couldn’t break through,” Hematites coach Ryan Reichel said. “They did a good job hustling (against) us.

“Any time you can get a road win you have to be happy.”

L’Anse (8-9) jumped out to a 20-15 lead after one quarter only to have Ishpeming (13-3) storm back to go on top 37-34 by halftime.

The Hematites made it 51-42 after three quarters before playing an even game with the Purple Hornets in the fourth.

Chloe Sjoholm and Mariah Austin contributed 11 points each to the winning cause, while Maino and teammate Ava Asgaard pulled down nine rebounds each.

Sarah Dix paced L’Anse with 16 points, while Addison Mattson and Alexis Francois added 12 apiece.

The Hornets kept themselves in it by making 19 of 24 free throws, a success rate of 79 percent.

Ishpeming plays at Escanaba on Thursday.

Lake Linden-Hubbell 47, Republic-Michigamme 37

At Republic, freshman Tailyn Raisanen scored 17 points, but it wasn’t quite good enough to get the Hawks their first Copper Mountain Conference win of the season.

“Tailyn was taking the right shots, stepping in and driving the lane a couple of times instead of trying lots of 3-pointers,” R-M coach April Radcliffe said.

The Hawks (1-16, 0-13) led 13-12 after one quarter before losing their shooting touch and falling behind 26-17 at halftime.

Radcliffe said her team fought back to get within four points with about five minutes remaining, but had to foul down the stretch as the Lakes (4-13, 4-9) made enough free throws.

Hawks’ sophomore Nikki Wertanen added 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

“She started to hit them at the end,” Radcliffe said.

Erin Seppala paced LL-H with 24 points, which included four triples, while Julia Koepel added 10 points.

The Lakes also won the JV game, 60-27.

Up next for R-M is a home game against Wakefield-Marenisco on Thursday.
