Holmgren, Yohe dominate in Hematites’ victory

By Journal Sports Staff

ISHPEMING — Junior forwards Hart Holmgren and Dondre Yohe combined for more than 50 points to lead Ishpeming to a 70-55 high school boys basketball victory over Manistique on Friday night.

Holmgren scored 29 points and Yohe 22, the two combining to also score 20 of the Hematites’ 25 fourth-quarter points.

That helped Ishpeming (8-8, 6-4 Mid-Peninsula Conference) preserve a 45-35 lead it built up through three quarters.

Holmgren made all six free throws he tried in the final eight minutes, too, as the Hematites sank 13 of 17 (77 percent) for the night.

For Manistique (1-16, 0-12), Jake Arnold led the way with 19 points, while fellow senior Darien Nichols added 14 and another 12th-grader, Colton Hoholik, had 10.

The teams were tied 16-16 after the first quarter with Nichols scoring six points, but Ishpeming built a 28-22 halftime lead after Yohe pumped in seven second-quarter points.

Munising 62, Superior Central 43

At Munising, the Mustangs went as star junior Alec Blank did.

Despite Blank finishing with a game-high 21 points, he went scoreless in the first quarter as Munising (15-2, 10-2 Skyline Central Conference) trailed 11-6.

Then Blank and Mustangs found their shooting touch. MHS raced to a 20-point second quarter to put the Mustangs ahead 26-19 at halftime.

SC (3-13, 2-9) stayed within 39-34 after three quarters before a big fourth quarter put Munising over the top.

“We’re notorious for slow starts,” Munising coach Terry Kienitz said. “In the second quarter, we started taking some higher-quality shots, plus we cut down on the unforced turnovers we had in the first quarter.”

He also felt with just seven players and playing Thursday night, the Cougars wore down in the fourth.

Blank also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, while teammate Cade Contreras pitched in with 14 points.

SC was paced by Beau Rondeau with 16 points and Joe Heinonen with 12. Levi Charlebois led the Cougars with six rebounds.
