Balanced scoring keys Munising girls’ victory

MUNISING — Led by senior Marissa Immel’s 16 points, five Munising players scored in double figures as the Mustangs raced past Superior Central 68-21 in high school girls basketball action on Thursday night.

Munising jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, extending it to 35-14 by halftime.

Kelsea Ackerman added 15 points to the winning cause, while Kianne Wendt added 14, Frankie Mattson 11 and Bailey Downs 10. Mattson also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Emma Rondeau paced SC with 10 points, while Willow Pasanen had a team-high six rebounds to go with eight points.

Munising also won the JV game 63-26.

Sault Ste. Marie 45, Newberry 34

At Newberry, the Indians seemed to wear down in the second half after establishing a 17-16 halftime lead.

Part of it might’ve been due to an injury suffered recently by all-state senior Taylor Bryant, who was hobbled with a hyperextended knee.

“She gave everything she could possibly have,” NHS coach Fred Bryant said. “We just seemed to run out of steam in the second half.”

Taylor’s freshman sister, Makenna Bryant, led Newberry with 12 points while Taylor Bryant had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Kayla Wilhelms paced the Blue Devils with 18 points.

The Soo also won the JV game, 47-25.

Wakefield-Marenisco 46, Republic-Michigamme 41

At Republic, Hawks senior Taylor Kaminen scored 15 points and freshman Tailyn Raisanen 14, but it wasn’t enough in this Copper Mountain Conference game.

W-M jumped out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter before R-M (1-17, 0-12 Copper Mountain Conference) pulled to within 19-17 by halftime.

“We played with more intensity in the second quarter,” Hawks coach April Radcliffe said. “We had been passing up some open shots before that.”

But W-M put the game away in the third quarter, extending its lead to 36-26 entering the final period. W-M was led by Darienne Korpi with 17 points.

W-M also won the JV game 33-21.

R-M closes its regular season at Dollar Bay on Monday night.
