Redmen icers get two victories downstate at North-South Showdown

TRAVERSE CITY — The Marquette Senior High School hockey team picked up two big wins this weekend at the North-South Showdown.

The Redmen took down Big Rapids 5-1 Saturday and Grandville 5-1 Friday. Hunter Doucette had a stellar game for Marquette in Saturday’s game as he notched a hat trick with three straight goals in the third period.

“We had two really good games,” Marquette head coach Doug Garrow said. “We scored 10 goals and only gave up two, so we played good defense as well. Hunter had a breakout game and I think this will give us some confidence going forward.”

Big Rapids got on the board first in the opening frame on a late goal by Thomas Crandell and the Cardinals maintained its 1-0 advantage for the rest of the period.

In the second frame, Marquette (9-4-1) got going offensively. Doucette picked up two early goals and then got his third with a power play tally at the 11:24 mark. Ryan Morrissey added another power play goal for the Redmen in the closing seconds of the frame.

Branden Campbell then capped off the win for Marquette with a shorthanded goal at the 15:59 mark of the third period.

In Friday’s game, the Redmen’s win was highlighted by two goals from Thomas Dunleavy and a shorthanded tally from Joe Phillips.

“We came out a little slow, but we made some adjustments and we took control,” Garrow said. “Thomas had a good night and we had contributions from every line. We’ve been struggling to score goals all (season), so this was nice to see.”

After Grandville took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Bryce Cassel, Marquette tied the game at the 6:45 mark on Phillips’ shorty.

Dunleavy gave the Redmen a 2-1 lead just 43 seconds into the second period and Morrissey padded the advantage with a goal at the 6:18 mark. Luke Beerman finished off Marquette’s scoring in the frame with a tally at the 14:58 mark.

In the third period, Dunleavy notched his second goal of the night at the 4:09 mark to nail down the victory.

Marquette plays at Escanaba Tuesday night.
