Negaunee boys, Baraga girls top first U.P. polls of season

IRONWOOD — Five area teams broke into the top five and two others received votes in the first high school basketball polls of the season conducted by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

The tallies were announced today and will be released on Tuesdays throughout the rest of the boys and girls regular seasons. Voting took place Monday morning before that day’s games were played.

Negaunee (6-0) was a unanimous pick as the No. 1 boys team in Class A-B-C by the seven voters, while Marquette (6-1) was third in that poll. Munising (6-0) was the first team out of the top five in sixth.

No area Class D boys team received votes in that poll.

The area’s other No. 1 team is the Baraga girls in Class D.

In a split vote, the Vikings (5-1) received four of seven first-place votes as No. 2 Forest Park got two and No. 4 Cedarville the other vote.

In Class A-B-C, Munising (7-0) was third and received three first-place votes, the same as No. 1 Houghton. Marquette (8-1) was fourth and Ishpeming (5-1) received one vote and didn’t crack the top five.

In the state Associated Press polls also released today, only a girls poll was conducted this week, since the boys season ends a week later in early March when an extra poll will be conducted for them.

The Marquette girls were on the honorable mention list in Class A, tied for 15th, while Baraga didn’t get a mention in the Class D voting nor Munising or Ishpeming in Class C.
