L’Anse falls to Jeffers in high school hockey, 9-3

HOUGHTON — L’Anse tied the game three times, but eventually Jeffers was able to pull away for a 9-3 high school hockey victory at Michigan Tech’s MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Monday night.

The Purple Hornets’ Foster Miller tied the game 1-1 just 4:47 after it started, Ethan Pattison made it 2-2 with 4:13 left in the first period and Miller knotted it at 3-3 almost exactly halfway through the second period.

Each answered a Jeffers scored between 25 seconds and four minutes earlier. The quickest response came on the final tally, Miller’s power-play goal that followed a shorthander by Jeffers’ Brendan Middleton.

Then the roof caved in on L’Anse, with the Jets scoring three times in the final seven minutes of the second and twice more in the first 1:14 of the third before one last goal made for the final margin.

Middleton finished with four goals, including a pair 27 seconds apart early in the third, along with two assists. Darren Nordstrom had two goals and two assists. For L’Anse, Tyler Fish had assists on his team’s first and last goals.

Hornets’ goalie Craig Mantila finished with 52 saves on 61 shots. After facing just nine shots in the opening period, he was peppered with 29 in the second and 23 in the third.
