ISHPEMING -- Skiers from a pair of Marquette County skiing club have participated in several ski jumping and nordic combined events this winter.
On Jan. 8, three skiers from the Ishpeming Ski Club took part in the Flying Eagles Invitational in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Ishpeming's Timothy Ziegler won the open class on the 30-meter ski jump, setting a hill record of 30.5 meters (100.1 feet), with teammate Matt Penrose finishing third and Isaac Lazenby fourth.
In the Nordic combined, ISC skiers swept the podium, with Ziegler first, Penrose second and Lazenby third.
Two races are coming in February for the Marquette County Cup nordic ski race series. On Feb. 7, at 4:30 p.m., a 4-by-1-kilometer classic relay race will be held at Suicide Bowl in Negaunee on the Norman Juhola Trail System, while on Feb. 28, also at 4:30 p.m., 2.5K and 5K skate races will finish at Suicide Bowl trails.
Three races have been already held that included members of the Ishpeming Ski Club and Superiorland Ski Club.
On Dec. 20 at the Al Quaal trails in Ishpeming, 58 high school and middle school racers competed in two- and five-kilometer skate ski races.
Ziegler won the high school boys race, with Superiorland's Ethan Hall second and Nate Garwood third.
SSC racers swept the top three spots in the high school girls race, with Ericka Asmus winning, Bethany Wright runner-up and Isabelle Carr third.
The same was true for the middle school girls, with SSC's Althea Bruggink first, Gwen Himes second and Maren Doughty third.
For middle school boys, SSC's Ruben Hatfield won, teammate Chase Stahl was second and Ishpeming's Silas Broberg was third.
The Jan. 11 event was held at the Forestville Trailhead with 61 particpants in 2.5K and 5K classic races.

Middle school girls -- Bruggink, Himes, Doughty
Middle school boys -- Seamus Waite (SSC), Chase Ettenhoffers (ISC), Connor Himes (SSC)
On Jan. 17, 57 skiers converged at the Blueberry Ridge Trailhead in 2.5K and 5K skate races.
