Frankie Mattson sets record as Munising girls basketball stays undefeated

ENGADINE — Frankie Mattson and the Munising Mustangs accomplished two big tasks Tuesday night.

Mattson became Munising’s all-time leading scorer and the Mustangs also remained undefeated with a 75-39 win over Engadine.

Mattson led Munising with 17 points, while four other players finished in double figures. Her career scoring total is up to 1,128 points, breaking the previous school record of 1,125.

Munising (11-0) was rolling right out of the gates as they outscored the Eagles 21-9 in the first quarter and held a 29-point advantage at halftime. The Mustangs continued to pour it on in the second half as they led 71-30 after three quarters.

“Our offense was off and running from the start,” Mustangs head coach Matt Mattson said. “We hit five treys and we had a balanced scoring night. We’re a pretty deep team, so we like to go up-tempo and we looked dang good tonight.”

Munising, which also won the JV game 49-29, hosts Carney-Nadeau on Thursday.

Bailey Froberg drilled eight 3-pointers and led the Hornets with 36 points.

“Froberg was in a zone,” Cardinals coach Bruce Mahler said. “She was hitting 3-pointers from six feet behind the arc.”

W-M’s Darienne Korpi and Rachel Obradovich each had double-doubles, Korpi netting 23 points and 11 boards while adding seven steals and eight assists. Obradovich had 12 points and 17 rebounds.
