Escanaba High School upends Westwood boys basketball team, 66-46

ESCANABA — Escanaba used an aggressive defense to help defeat Westwood 66-46 in a high school boys basketball game played Tuesday.

The young Patriots were victimized by an aggressive trapping 1-3-1 defense that led to 25 turnovers, according to a report from the Escanaba Daily Press.

“But when they went man, we were able to play our game and not be pushed back on our heels,” WHS coach Chad Hewitt said. “I thought we had one of our better shooting nights.”

Westwood (1-7) hit 20 of 56 shots for 36 percent, but made 19 of 42 (45 percent) inside the 3-point arc.

Junior 6-foot-3 center David Delarye led the Patriots with 13 points, followed by sophomores Jacob Adriano with 10 and Nathan Beckman with nine points.

Hewitt said Esky’s ability to control the paint also hurt his smaller team. The Eskymos outrebounded Westwood 28-20.

“They got a lot of second-chance opportunities,” said Hewitt, who starts three sophomores in his lineup. “We didn’t do a very good job of boxing out. They didn’t shoot a lot of jump shots tonight.”

Escanaba also won the JV game 57-51.
