MUNISING — Frankie Mattson’s double-double helped lead the Munising past Bark River-Harris 67-43 win Tuesday night

The Mustangs gave up an uncharacteristic 18 points in the first quarter running a press defense, but switched to a man-to-man defense and only allowed 25 points the remainder of the game.

Mattson led the Mustangs (9-0) with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Three other Mustangs reached double-digit scoring figures, including Marissa Immel (16), Kianne Wendt (10) and Kelsea Ackerman (10).

“Any night you get that kind of scoring distribution is a good one,” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said.

“Our defense needed to pick it up a bit, and I was proud of the way our team rebounded after the first. Bark River is a decent team, so it’s a solid win.”

Norway 56, Gwinn 32

At Gwinn, Norway used a strong effort to close the third quarter and put their game out of the reach of the Modeltowners.

After the Modeltowners (0-10) rebounded from a 12-point deficit at the end of the first period and cut the Knights’ lead down to nine, Norway went on a 10-0 run at the end of the frame to take a commanding 18-point lead into the fourth.

“We played well for the entire game except for that stretch,” Gwinn head coach Ben Olsen said. “We made bad decisions, and they were also forcing them on us and it got out of hand. Our girls never quit and always give effort, but they were getting quick steals and layups and it cost us quick.”

Brenna Bruce led the Modeltowners in scoring with 11 points.

Marquette 57,

Gladstone 45

At Marquette, the Redettes used a strong fourth quarter to hold off the Braves.

Up only by two points after the third, Marquette outscored Gladstone 17-7 in the final frame to get the win.

Amber Huebner led the Redettes with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Baraga 68, Republic-Michigamme 23

In Baraga, the Vikings’ defense held Republic-Michigamme to single-digit scoring in all four quarters to earn the home win.

Casey Melko scored 20 points for Baraga, followed by Megan Kinnunen’s 15 points.

For Republic-Michigamme, Shawna DuMoulin’s 14 points led her team in scoring.

“It was a rough game overall,” Republic-Michigamee’s head coach April Radcliffe said. “(DuMoulin) did a good job, and can take even more shots than she has so far this season.

“We had too many unforced turnovers, and we need to practice rebounding and just catching the ball.”
