WINDSOR, Ontario, Canada -- Arnoldo Herrera of the Northern Michigan University men's swimming team represented Costa Rica at the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships held Dec. 6-11.

Herrera broke Costa Rican records in all three events he swam -- the 50-meter breaststroke in 28.65 seconds, the 100 breast in 1 minute, 2.39 seconds and the 200 breast in 2:15.28.

"Arnoldo represented the Wildcats well this week, and it was fun to see him on the world stage," NMU head coach Heidi Voigt said recently. "His performance is something that can never be taken away from him, and he definitely earned his records.

"Thanks to all of his professors for letting him make up his work so he could attend this amazing event."

Herrera's highest finish came in the 200 breast where he took 35th with his NCAA "B" cut time.

Last summer, Herrera won six medals while representing his country at the 2016 Central American Championships.

The Heredia, Costa Rica, native earned a gold medal in the 200 breast in a then-Costa Rican record of 2:21.34 and anchored the champion 400 freestyle relay.

He also captured silver medals in the 50 breast, 100 breast, 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.

Herrera will rejoin the Wildcats for their next scheduled meet at the Copa Coqui Invite in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Thursday, Jan. 5.
