Munising Mustangs girls basketball team puts clamps down in 3rd quarter vs. Engadine

MUNISING — Munising used a third-quarter clamp-down on defense to race past Engadine 78-42 in a girls basketball game played Monday night.

The Mustangs (2-0) led 39-28 at halftime before limiting the Eagles to just three points in the third quarter.

“Give Engadine credit, they made a lot of shots in the first half,” MHS coach Matt Mattson said. “But we didn’t get back on defense at times.

“After halftime, we did a lot better job getting back and forcing them further out for their shots.”

Munising scored 20 points in the third to take a commanding 59-31 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The Mustangs’ Frankie Mattson led all scorers with 23 points, while teammate Kianne Wendt added 15, Kelsea Ackerman 14 and Bailey Downs 11 along with a team-high nine rebounds.

Allison Margherio paced Engadine with 12 points.

Munising, which also won the JV game 39-17, has a big Alger County battle on Wednesday at Superior Central.

Superior Central 61, Stephenson 53

At Stephenson, the already shorter Cougars faced an uphill climb when their tallest player, 5-foot-8 Emma Rondeau, faced foul trouble all game and fouled out halfway through the third quarter.

The Eagles had leads of 15-13 and 31-25 after each of the first two quarters before SC (2-0) put together a 24-point third quarter and took a 49-43 advantage entering the fourth.

“The girls dug deep in the second half,” SC coach Greg Trowbridge said. “Our pressure and movement was real good and affected (Stephenson’s) shots.”

Despite the early exit, Rondeau still scored 10 points. Teammate Jada Johnson paced the Cougars with 16 points, while Sydney Emard had 13.

“We’re fortunate, all of our starters can score in double digits on any given night,” Trowbridge said.

The other two starters, Taylor Silta and Tori Tyner, nearly did just that, scoring eight points apiece.

Kyleigh Cross paced Stephenson with 17 points.

Stephenson won the JV game 52-12.

Bark River-Harris 46, Gwinn 32

At Harris, a tough Broncos defense made life difficult on Gwinn when it had the ball.

“(Bark River-Harris’) pressure took us out of what we wanted to do,” Modeltowners coach Ben Olsen said.

Gwinn (0-2) not only shot just 29 percent on 10 of 35 shooting, but committed 27 turnovers.

“That’s 27 shot attempts we never had a chance to take,” Olsen said.

BR-H had modest leads of 9-5 after one quarter and 23-13 at halftime.

Kia Evans led the Modeltowners with 12 points, while teammate Hailey Hill pulled down a dozen rebounds.

The Broncos’ Kelsey Boucher led all scorers with 14 points.

Gwinn, which won the JV game 39-32, hits the road Thursday for a Mid-Peninsula Conference game at Iron Mountain.
