Sustainable city

To the Journal editor: I’m writing to you to express concern over public waste disposal in the city of Marquette. Marquette is a town that markets itself on its outdoor opportunities and nature-oriented way of life. This draws in many adventurous tourists and sustainably minded residents. With lots of people outside, this leads to inevitable outdoor waste. In the downtown area, there are various garbage bins that downtown Marquette is responsible for. However, many plastic, paper, and glass items are often tossed into these bins. It would behoove downtown Marquette to consider ...

A nation of laws

To the Journal editor: While smoking my pipe this afternoon, I was contemplating the current state of affairs in our nation. Sherlock Holmes once described a particularly vexing problem as needing three pipes to find the solution. Unfortunately, I do not believe that increasing my consumption of tobacco will provide a solution to our dilemma. I do, however, have a grasp of the problems. They are numerous. The reckless approach to the economy, disrupting the stock market and world trade. The destruction of a century of goodwill with our allies and the inexplicable praise of ...

Where is morality?

To the Journal editor: Network is a Catholic organization that describes itself as “Advocates for Justice, Inspired by Catholic Sisters.” It’s been around a long time. Think nuns on the bus. This group lobbies for the most vulnerable. Think Beatitudes and Matthew 25. Each year they have legislative priorities. Here we go for 2025: Project Medicaid. No cuts or “restructuring.” Medicaid is the funding for nursing homes for our elderly. It’s also medical insurance for those earning very little like a dishwasher in a restaurant or those earning nothing like a caregiver for a ...

Support of Putin just wrong

To the Journal editor: The many lies contained in Andrew Napolitano’s piece (“My weekend in Moscow) on the March 15-16 Mining Journal’s editorial page cannot go unchallenged. His piece reminded me of the song “Springtime for Hitler,” from the broadway musical, “The Producers.” I had no idea that Putin was so warm and fuzzy. Tell that to Navalny, Yushenov, Politkovskaya, Litvinenko and the dozens of other political dissidents Putin has killed. Contrary to Napolitano’s lies, Ukraine’s 2014 Euromaidan revolution was not orchestrated by the U.S. State Department, ...

Distinction made

To the Journal editor: A recent letter was published in regards to supporting “Medicare Advantage.” However, Medicare Advantage plans are not actually “Medicare.” They are private insurance plans, which are skimming billions of dollars from the government and from the people who enroll in them. That is the goal of these insurance companies: to make money! These Advantage plans may seem cheap right now with all their supposed benefits, but just wait until there is a need for an expensive, life-saving procedure or medication — something almost all of us will require at some ...

Fluoridation 101

To the Journal editor: State College Borough in Pennsylvania voted to end water fluoridation in 2022. “Systemic application removes medical consent and freedom of choice,” Kern (Water Authority member) wrote. “Fluoride can only be removed from water by reverse osmosis and ion exchange resins, which may be financially difficult or unattainable for residents to install in their homes.” Many communities in Wisconsin and Michigan ended water fluoridation, including Alpena. “I’m not a chemist, I’m not a doctor, and I’m not a scientist,” Alpena Mayor Waligora said. “We ...
