Justice for Ukraine

Responding to Jack Bergman’s letter to me of  April 25, about this administration’s position on Ukraine. The centerpiece, is the withdrawal of U.S. military support, and an appeasement “peace” plan that includes ceding 20% of Ukraine to Russia. In 1938, British Prime Minister Chamberlain agreed to give part of Czechoslovakia to Germany in an attempt to avoid a larger war. This led to Germany's invasion of Poland and  the start of World War II. A history lesson, Jack. Bergman stated he wants a peace plan “that maintains an independent Ukraine …. and  preserves Ukrainian ...

Fighting the good fight

It is good to see so many concerned citizens submitting Letters to the Editor that question what is happening in our government every day. The only reason for hope for the survival of country is seeing American citizens stand up for the poor, women, children, Head Start, federal employees, our national parks, our public lands, the environment, Medicaid, Medicare, immigrants, people of color, veterans, teachers, the elderly, the disabled, free journalism and on and on. Who knows who or what Trump will target next? I'm guessing that all of us who speak out are on a "list." So be it. ...

Letter to the editor

With our two late winter storms, don't let that get to you. (Soon, the snow) will melt ... and into spring we go. A few years ago, I looked at what I wrote about this time of year. It's about our Upper Peninsula of Michigan — beauty in each season, many sights to see. We still have our forests and the many rivers, plus our big, beautiful Lake Superior and some good people live here. With all the negative news from Washington D.C., and many areas getting a lot of really bad weather, just get out and away from the news. As I've written before, there are lots of places to enjoy, our ...

Trump Administration suppression of First Amendment rights

Tyrannical governments such as fascist Italy, Spain and Germany during the period of 1934-1945 used propaganda and suppression of the press to maximize their control and quash dissidence within their violent regimes. Recent historical examples of disinformation efforts are found in the propaganda of Russia under Putin, or the closed society of North Korea under Kim Jong Un. The goal of this practice is censorship and the subjugation of the people.  Former President George W. Bush at the Spirit of Liberty Forum in 2017 said, “No democracy pretends to be a tyranny. Most tyrannies ...

Protest was OK

Congratulations to your American Spirit, leading the current Americans on a particular protest on Feb. 19. You captured my soul. Also, usually, Yoopers are conservative, but no more! Musk must be ignored. Holding and waving that chainsaw is a big insult to us loggers. Good work, good signs.

Mutual pledge to each other

Per 2024 Pew Research poll, ninety eight percent of citizens (Republicans, Independents, and Democrats) fear Democracy is at risk. The good news, all of us agree Democracy is the only stable form of government. Bad news, the power of the citizens to hold government in check is under threat by a minority of nefarious individuals’ side-stepping Constitutional rules and feeding disinformation and fear to the masses. Each of us can recite the first few paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence but it’s our commitment to the very last sentence which preserves Democracy, “And for ...
