To the Journal editor:
My wife, Valentyna, is a Ukrainian native. She knows firsthand the suffering of the Ukrainian people as they fight for the same freedoms Americans fought for in 1776 from another foreign tyrant.
Valentyna’s sister and niece live in occupied Ukraine. So, President Trump’s latest announcement that he had made a deal with Putin, an enemy of our country, to purchase diesel fuel was a personal insult. How is it possible that Trump could do this?
It was only a few weeks ago that he signed bipartisan legislation, named to honor Lindsey Graham, that sanctions countries who purchase Russian energy products, in response to the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s refusal to negotiate peace.
The legislation passed the U.S. Senate, 86-11. Think about this. By agreeing to buy Russian diesel oil, wouldn’t American be violating the very sanctioning law Trump just signed into law? By doing this, American dollars will be boosting Russian profits that will be used to finance more killing of Ukrainian people and let us not forget that America is still financially supporting the Ukrainian effort to stop the Russian killing machine.
Because of the obvious immorality of what Trump is doing, four Republican and two Democratic U.S. Senators immediately issued this plea to the president: “The United States should not provide a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The administration must immediately reverse course.”
The bottom line is that Trump’s foreign policy of aiding an anti-democratic communist regime should be repulsive to all Americans who believe in the foundational roots of America. Supporting fascist and communistic regimes, like Putin’s Russia, is antithetical to American historical values of freedom and liberty, values that American patriots fought to defend over America’s 250-year history.
Enough is enough. It is time to change course and vote for Democratic candidates who will bring America back to its foundational values.
