Thank you for publishing the article about Hilda Holmgren, my mom. She didn't talk much about the election, but she was very pleased with Ken Lowe's editorial about her integrity.
We should emphasize that her victory would not have been possible without the strong and dedicated women in the Women's Civic League.
Without Holmgren, the council had eight members with most votes resulting in a 4-4 split. In order to conduct business, a ninth member was needed. Larry Arnold was the logical choice, as he was next in line according to the vote count. However, members of the council nominated another person, Joe Paul. Several meetings with many votes, always resulted in a tie. The vacant seat had to be filled within 30 days of the election.
The Women's Civic League continued to be involved, reminding the council not to "overlook the voters' expression of nearly a thousand citizens, who indicated Mr. Arnold as their choice for councilman."
After another tie vote at a subsequent meeting, a recess was called and a decision was made to support Larry Arnold. Integrity was restored to the city council.
