To the Journal editor:
It's understandable that U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, does not know much about forest wilderness, living as he does, in New Orleans. But to propose sanctioning Canada for allowing its smoke to cross our border? Does he think Canada controls rainfall wind, humidity and temperature? Does he think they should have crews out thinning brush in forests that have no roads?
I know he supports the president who would rather blame someone for a problem than try to fix the problem but give me a break. This is the Upper Peninsula. When neighbors have a problem, we try to help them.
What can Rep. Bergman do to help? Well, he could act to restore all the budget and staff cuts that the Elon Musk DOGE kids made to the U.S. Forest Service. He could support efforts to curb, climate change, rather than efforts to make it worse, like he does now. He could propose and vote to take a few billion of the dollars we are spending to kill people in the Middle East and spend that money beefing up our fire control capability. He could ask our confused, elderly president to ask Prime Minister Carney, "What can we do to help?"
Of course, that would require having the guts to disagree with the administration.
