GOP House missed mark
To the Journal editor:
Please check out what our Republican State House did in Lansing (recently) They cancelled almost $645 million in work projects that were approved and ongoing into 2026. Speaker Matt Hall said “not all of them were waste, abuse and fraud.”
I wish he would show at least one case that was! By pulling this bizarre and egotistical move, Matt Hall threw away $48 million that will be returned to the feds and he lost Michigan $245 million that came from matching funds and other sources besides taxes. (Numbers are from Bridge Michigan, Dec. 10) How is that for managing our money? Let’s throw it away?
And state Rep. Karl Bohnak, R-AuTrain, seems to have forgotten his Peninsula over Party slogan since some of that money was to give a leg up to businesses in Marquette, Ironwood and Escanaba. These old men are losing their marbles for sure: Matt Hall said he would like to support the Holocaust Museum in Farmington Hills but yet that was one of the projects he put the kibosh on.
This money was also for immediate needs like helping pregnant women and new mothers with their medicine expenses, veterans affairs and food programs. Not everything can wait until the new year to be sorted out, as these old men seem to think.
I really resent how the Republicans pulled this stunt while everyone else is busy with their children’s Christmas concerts, sending packages to far away loved ones and shoveling our daily snow. We shouldn’t have to spend our precious time watching that rich old men don’t steal our money and crash our economy.
Let’s vote them out next year and get some smart young people in there.
