This is not normal

There is lots of talk about Executive Orders these days. It seems there are so many! Or is there just increased scrutiny? What is “normal” anyway?

According the Federal Register, in the first 100 days, President Trump signed 139 Executive Orders. This is compared to President Biden signing 162 in 4 years. Yes, Trump has signed almost as many in 100 days as Biden signed in 4 years.

But what about Trump’s first term? Is this just his style? In the first term, Trump signed 220 orders in 4 years. The last 10 presidents (starting with Nixon) have averaged 266 per 4 year term. More than daily Executive Orders is not normal.

Executive orders must be consistent with our constitution and laws. If Executive orders are thought to be illegal or unconstitutional, they are challenged in court. If a court rules that the order was illegal or unconstitutional, the Executive Order is revoked.

What is the status of 139 Executive Orders in 100 days? Many have been or are being challenged in courts across the country, including many heard or waiting to be heard by the Supreme Court. Many have been blocked – including 3 this week, one of which was deemed unconstitutional and another likely in violation of the 1st amendment. Sadly, Trump is also defying court orders, refusing to comply. This is not mormal.

The Constitution has a system to separate powers, with checks and balances to prevent one person from dictating laws and budget. What is the Republican Congress’ response to a flurry of Executive Orders which seek to overturn the laws and budget they passed? Mostly silence or support. Their response as the Executive Branch defies Judicial rulings? Mostly silence or support. This is not normal.
