Backing Gwinn bond issue

To the Journal editor:

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, voters in the Gwinn Area School District will vote on a $45.55 million dollar bond to be paid back over 30 years. This is a critical vote regarding the near- and long-term future of Gwinn Schools. I strongly encourage all voters to vote yes on the bond proposal.

My reasons for strongly supporting a yes vote include financial justifications, potential to improve student learning and proficiency, and enhanced safety and security for all students, grades K-12.

The sinking fund does not generate enough funds each year to repair, replace or renovate all the items that need to be addressed. It has funded some of the most critical projects such as clean drinking water, flooring and lighting. New millage will be necessary in 1-3 years due to the major repairs these buildings require. If this bond proposal passes, the sinking fund millage will be eliminated.

The current estimate to make the necessary repairs and renovations to all three buildings is over $41 million. We can upgrade portions of the current MS/HS, plus build state of the art new classrooms for the elementary students for $45.55 million. Annual maintenance costs will be reduced with this plan.

With all students, K-12, attending one school, student learning and proficiency will be improved. This will especially have a positive impact on young students, K-5. Teacher’s time will be more efficient and allow for even more collaboration.

Thus, the educational needs of students can be identified and addressed. The plan fully compliments the vision and plan of our new Superintendent, the administration, and our School Board.

The upgraded portions of the MS/HS include plans to renovate the science wing, wood and metal shops and new CADD/Welding/manufacturing areas. These substantial improvements will bolster the vocational education programs.

Last, but not least, item the bond will enhance safety and security of our students. Entrance doors will be more secure. Renovations of the main office areas and main entrance vestibule will provide for a secure school entrance procedure. There will be emergency generators for lighting, boiler operations, technology, and kitchen refrigeration equipment. This will allow the district to be an emergency shelter.

To voters, I thank you for your yes vote on Nov. 7.

Starting at $3.23/week.
