We can do better
To the Journal editor:
I am writing with possible concern about a sight being considered for the new veterans home. I am not a chemist and cannot say if a Superfund site is really ever clean.
My concern or wonder is whether the only sight being discussed per TV for a new veterans home is an old dump Superfund site.
It is my understanding whoever ends up owning the property will be required to do regular testing to ensure the sight is still safe. Why would anyone pick an old dump for a new veterans home if there is the slightest chance there could be contaminants still on the property. In my opinion our veterans deserve better.
Below is what I found by Googling Cliff Dow Plt Site; Shore Of Lake Superior, Marquette, MI 49855; National Priorities List: No; Status: Archived
Cliff Dow plant site is a superfund site located at the shore of Lake Superior in Marquette. The Environmental Protection Agency identifies sites such as Cliff Dow because they pose or had once posed a potential risk to human health and/or the environment due to contamination by one or more hazardous wastes.
Cliff Dow is currently registered as an archived Superfund site by the EPA and does not require any clean up action or further investigation at this time.
