Common sense needed

To the Journal editor:

I recently contacted Senator Stabenow, Senator Peters, and Representive Bergman suggesting if they are serious about reducing gun violence a constitutional amendment has to be introduced.

Currently, the U.S. Supreme Court has shown it is pro-gun and has no problem shooting down legislation that limit gun ownership. A constitutional amendment is the only way to insure that could not happen. I suggested the senators and representative should resign if they are not willing to propose an amendment because of failure.

To date, only Peters responded and here is what he had to say: “As a former lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and gun owner, I understand the unique place firearms hold in America. We must respect the constitutional rights of law-abiding, responsible gun owners. However, there are commonsense steps Congress must take to reduce gun violence, make our communities safer and keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. We have seen too many heart-breaking mass shootings in our nation’s schools, churches and public gathering places. In addition, individual acts of gun violence claim the lives of American each and every day. That is why I pressed for urgently needed action to reduce gun-related violence, expand background checks and implement commonsense measures to protect public safety and prevent future tragedies.”

If you agree legislation will not do it, we need a constitutional amendment contact your elected officials to get the process started.

If enough of us do this we could get the ball rolling.
