Care with capital C

To the Journal editor:

With the unfortunate news from (the local) nursing home in Ishpeming it’s important to know; check on your loved ones daily.

If you live away make sure a close friend or other family member is you’re confident. I have worked in a local nursing home and was an in home health caregiver for several years.

While state and federal regulatory institutions have checks and balances, they are not always full proof.

I know when I was an employee nursing home and home health, it was a team of people working together for the good of the resident or residents.

Sadly that is not the case today. An employee of a nursing home resolved a situation on Fat Tuesday to the delight of the residents.

As per tradition, they wanted paczkis. Please note those residents on dietary restrictions were provided for as well.

The staff member went to a local store and bought them as the kitchen hadn’t remembered the years long tradition. The staff, administration and especially the residents were happy.

However, the employee was reprimanded for doing an honorable and compassionate thing. Ironic (that) it’s two weeks before Spread The Goodness Day.

I would suggest that the head of the kitchen and administration rethink their ignorance of the situation and revisit their mission statement to help them resolve the situation with their employee.

Ask your residents, they’ll help you in making the correct decision.
