‘Staties’ saved day

To the Journal editor:

My husband and I had an adventure the other day. We were driving around in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula, just soaking up Nature’s beauty, when a rock kicked up and split our oil pan!

We were stopped in the middle of nowhere with no cell service to boot. I remembered a trick I had seen online and tried to call 911, and it went through.

I told the dispatcher our location, (which was way out a logging road in the Huron Mountains,) and she said she’d try to get a tow operator to rescue us. Night came and we decided to try to get some sleep.

The only scary time was when a logging truck, lit up like a Christmas tree, came barreling straight at us, then swerved and missed us by inches. Hours later another vehicle approached and stopped.

Two Michigan State Police officers from the Munising post had driven all the way to find us! They ended up driving us all the way home to Carlshend. They probably drove 200 miles that night just to make sure we were safe.

As it turned out, no towing company had accepted, and we had to make arrangements with our local guy the next day. (Thanks to you, Bob Goodwin!)

Anyway, we got home safe and sound thanks to two staties who went above and beyond. Thank you, Trooper Yeagley and Trooper Meyering!
