Green New Deal misses mark

To the Journal editor:

There is so much junk science these days it causes concerned people to make ignorant or outrageous assertions, some of which have appeared in The Mining Journal’s letters.

Consider “one can never have too little carbon dioxide (CO2); CO2 pollution; someone citing statistics for carbon particulates while talking of CO2 (gas) and climate czar John Kerry declaring we must remove all atmospheric CO2.

Let’s imagine the worst case of CO2. There would be no vegetation, no food, no oxygen, hence no people. With no CO2 to slow diffusion of heat to outer space; icy temperatures from sundown to sunrise. More CO2 accelerated plant growth, hence less required crop acreage, less irrigation water and less fertilization.

Can there be too much CO2? The flippant answer is no. Before presenting a more nuanced answer, I would like to assert that “the tipping point” is a political construct and bears no semblance to reality.

My more accurate answer is “no one actually knows.” The mistake the masses have made is that either CO2 or temperature is an independent variable and thus everything else can be assumed constant while CO2 or temperature is manipulated. This is false. The universe is composed of nearly a dozen dynamic and interactive systems. Hence many systems are simultaneously varied. This creates numerous feedback loops which search for an equilibrium of the universe. Several organizations have used super computers to create hundreds of simulations in search of something that represents reality. Indeed the IPCC keeps revising its projections downward.

One can also look at the 380 million years of data covering numerous ice ages and warm periods. C02 levels reached in excess of 2000ppm. In our case (420ppm); if the trace gas, CO2, were doubled, it would still be a “trace” gas.

In summary, the “science has been in” for over two decades and yet there still exists no reliable climate model. Certainly no model that should be used to determine drastic policy initiatives. This should be proof positive that we have a lot of inept scientists or the theory is wrong.

Just say no to the New Green Deal.
