New system proposed

To the Journal editor:

Please, imagine a world in which there is no need to vote for the lesser of two evils.

A world in which we have real choice, in which we vote for someone, not against someone. That world is more achievable than you might think. We are forced to vote with these strategies not because of the candidates, but because of the structure of our voting system.

In our present voting system, we cast our vote for one candidate and the candidate with the most votes wins, even if less than a majority! The time has come to put an end to this system, and embrace a better way.

A better system would be Ranked Choice Voting.

In this system, we cast votes for as many candidates as we please in the order of our preference. If someone receives a majority of first preference votes, they are elected. If not, we drop the candidate with the lowest votes, redistribute that candidate’s second choice votes, and repeat until a candidate holds a majority. This is within our grasp.

I have joined up with Rank MI vote. We are trying to have a conversation about rank choice voting with a view towards a possible ballet initiative for the 2022 election.
