To the Journal editor:

I followed the impeachment trial. Trump’s lawyer is incorrect about not impeaching a past president because Trump was impeached on Jan. 13, 2021, while he was still president.

Furthermore this isn’t a politically driven impeachment; it’s an impeachment to prevent the U.S. from becoming a dictatorship. If one pays attention to what Trump says and adds who his political heroes are, it becomes clear how he envisions himself in power.

He tried mightily to convince his followers there would be massive fraud months before the election. He followed up with there was massive fraud and at first he claimed he had won, which morphed into, he won by a landslide. My goodness, there must have been a huge conspiracy engaged in by election officials, judges, secretaries of state and governors — some who are Republicans and some appointed by Trump — to have pulled such a huge fraud off!

Many senators and representatives furthered the lie by claiming Trump was correct; he did win the election. I believe these should also face consequences; they are also responsible for the riot on Jan. 6.

It’s a shame there is on way to compel the to speak the truth to their constituents. Mitt Romney is right when he said the way to respect one’s constituents is, by telling them the truth!
