Rep wrong on support

To the Journal editor:

After the attack on our nation’s capitol on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Bergman, R-Watersmeet, voted to challenge Electoral College votes to confirm President-Elect Joe Biden.

In a joint announcement with Rep. Walberg on Monday, Bergman stated “The very foundation of our Democracy lies in the tenets of a free, fair and secure election.”

However, calling an election unfair, doesn’t make it so.

As of Monday, over 50 legal challenges have been mounted by Republicans since Election Day. They have won none of these cases. Almost all have been withdrawn or lost, a few are pending.

Biden’s win in the November election has been upheld by Republican appointed members of the U.S. Supreme Court, Republican appointed federal judges and the overwhelming majority of Republican senators, including, Senate Majority Leader McConnell.

In addition, former President George W. Bush, former Attorney General Bill Barr and now, Vice President Mike Pence have upheld Biden’s win.

Rep. Bergman also stated in the Monday announcement that Congress has an obligation to prove that our elections “follow laws in place.” You have taken two solemn oaths to support our Constitution, one, as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and the other, as a member of Congress.

You know, better than most, that the U.S. Constitution clearly states that it is the states that decide electors, not the Congress.

Rep. Bergman, your actions in arguing to disallow the votes of yourself and over 5 million other Michiganders disrespects the vote of every Republican, Democrat and Independent in our state.
