Social distancing key factor

To the Journal editor:

With the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, I believe many are forgetting the one most important act to prevent the spread — social distancing.

So much emphasis has been put on the wearing of masks and face coverings — as if that is the be-all, end-all, which it’s not — as evident by the recent rapid spread of the virus. I’m not saying masks don’t work. I am sure they help somewhat, but people have complacent in staying away from others thinking “well, I’m wearing a mask.”

When out in public, especially stores, people are not maintaining proper distancing. One cannot stop in an aisle to grab a can off the shelf without having someone come up behind them and pass. Seriously? You cannot stop at least 6 feet back and wait 2.7 seconds for someone to put an item in their cart? Patience needs to make a comeback.

When in stores, STOP and wait for the person ahead of you to move on. Remember all the guidelines — continue to wash hands frequently and thoroughly; use hand sanitizer when necessary; don’t touch your face; wear a mask in public spaces; and always keep a healthy social distance from others.

Please, let’s be polite, patient, and remember to keep our distance from others. It’s the most important thing we can do outside of staying home.

Stay safe everyone.
