New book on Shiras deserves attention
To the Journal editor:
“Shiras saluted with special signage,” appearing in (Monday’s) Mining Journal, brings welcome attention to the signage project underway for the Shiras Park at Picnic Rocks.
Its summary of the far-reaching contributions of George Shiras III and his strong connection to Marquette invites further reading.
With considerable enthusiasm, I feel pressed to call attention to a brand new biography of particular relevance: “Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography,” written by Northern Michigan University professor James H. McCommons and available locally and on the internet.
