To the Journal editor:

I recently read with alarm U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman’s statement to The Mining Journal about schools no longer teaching U.S. history and the Constitution.

Having taught those subjects at the middle school level for over 40 years, I feared that our schools had gone to pot since I retired.

Horrified, I phoned Marquette Area Public Schools, Negaunee schools and Powell Township School (a personal favorite). Lo and behold, they still teach this stuff!

Now, truth is a core democratic value, according to our state school standards. Really, I am not kidding. So I am concerned about an elected official making a public statement that is clearly not true and is easily fact checked.
