We should learn from COVID-19 experience

To the Journal editor:

Here we are into June with the COVID-19 ongoing. Time will tell what effect it will have for our country. Some states will reopen others are playing it safe. My opinion would be keep safe and save lives. Only time will tell.

I do salute all the doctors, nurses, caregivers, etc. It’s when called to duty be there. Reminds me serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Our mission was and still is save people in dangerous situations. We did our duty even though it may have cost us our lives. And with the recent observance of Memorial Day, it was a time to remember all who served in the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy. Many gave their lives. And many have passed on.

When I go to Park Cemetery and visit my wife who passed away Feb. 18, 2017, I walk around and see many veteran markers and Memorial Day flags put on the gravesites. I just hope that with this COVID-19 virus outbreak, that when we overcome it, that it will change people’s lives.

Think more about love and caring for each other. Be ready to help those in need. As a country, we people, as our Constitution says, work for all of us together in good times and in times of hardship.

As I see it now, it seems still divided. If that continues our future will not be good. Read about history on our earthly planet.

Wars and other destructive things will be going on. The one time I remember that it was peaceful and most people had a decent life was after the Korean War, 1953-1961 before the beginning of the Vietnam War. And many leaders’ lives were taken: JFK, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. plus much social unrest.

My final thought is as I’ve said in my own life trust the Lord, do His will and hopefully peace will be the way.
