Redmen/Redettes doesn’t demean
To the Journal editor:
In May 2016, as the debate over the Washington Redskins name continued to stir controversy, The Washington Post released a poll that found 9 in 10 Native Americans were not offended by the name. The newspaper had polled over 500 Native Americans throughout the country.
Dan Snyder, the owner of the Redskins, issued the following statement after the release of the poll results: “The Washington Redskins team, our fans and our community have always believed our name represents honor, respect and pride. Today’s Washington Post polling shows that Native Americans agree.”
As a 1969 graduate of MHS, I never felt during my years there, or since, that the Redmen name was meant to be derogatory in any way.
