Commentary on life

To the Journal editor:

Pro-lifers argue for the infinite value of each precious fertilized human egg until the moment that the baby is actually born. Then, well, not so much.

Private and governmental health insurers compute the value of a human life to determine which drugs or treatments that they will allow. Insurers, like casinos, have to meticulously pre-manage the odds in order to make sure they’ll beat the odds, each and every time. The only casinos that go broke seem to be those owned by the stable genius. Makes you wonder.

Outside of the world of the Hallmark channel, “I’d do anything for you,” seems to some very definite limits.

These days, promises don’t seem to mean very much at all. Lifelong employees are furious when they discover that their promised pensions are not fully funded.

Politicians who promise not to touch “entitlements” before they’re elected, routinely change their minds once they’re in office. An “entitlement”, you see, is something you pay for all throughout your working life that politicians renege on after you retire. Make America Great Again, eh, sucker?

On the bright side, relocating every possible job to China raised the standard of living there from starving-to-death all the way up to dirt poor; never mind that the drinking water and air are being poisoned along the way. And never mind the fact that many people in our country are working two, or even three jobs, just to make ends meet.

What’s a person worth? Not much unless you’re already loaded.

It’s said that if you evenly divided up all the wealth among all the people, and then waited ten years, you’d find that things had reverted back to there being a few very, very rich people and hordes of very poor people.

Moses had it, “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be … For the poor you will always have with you in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'”

Either everybody counts, or nobody counts.
